Phonograms

Roll up, roll up! Select your phonogram deck here! A phonogram is a written sign, in this case a hieroglyph, that represents a sound. Just as the written letter b represents the b sound in spoken English, the horned viper hieroglyph is thought to have represented the f sound in ancient Egyptian. Egyptian hieroglyphs come in three flavours: 1-consonent (uniliteral), 2-consonent (biliteral) and 3-consonent (triliteral) - the ancient Egyptian's didn't write down vowels!
